Facelift is an effective way to trim years from your appearance, tightening skin to reveal the youthful vibrancy that time tried so hard to conceal.
This major change to your features is also major surgery, and preparing for the recovery period can help ensure a successful outcome. Below, the skilled plastic surgeons of Seduction Cosmetic Center in Miami answer questions they often hear from clients who are considering facelift:
How will I feel after surgery?
When you awake from general anesthesia, you may feel cold and slightly nauseated. This is typical of any major surgical procedure. Patients often report experiencing a range of emotions as their body begins the healing process. As the anesthesia wears off, you will feel tightness and tenderness near your incisions. The area will be covered with a dressing that will also hold in place tubes to drain excess blood and reduce swelling.
Swelling will actually increase in the first three days. You will have bruising and experience a moderate degree of pain, which can be managed with medication prescribed by your experienced Seduction Cosmetic Center plastic surgeon.
How soon will I return to normal activities?
You should be able to resume light activities within a few days. As soon as possible, you should begin walking around to boost circulation, support optimal healing and prevent blood clots. Straining, lifting and bending should be avoided, however.
By the second day, you will be able to wash your hair. You can use makeup again in about two weeks. Your skin may feel dry and rough for a few months. Your final result — your smooth, rejuvenated expression — will emerge in one to four months, as swelling and bruising subside.
If your procedure included incisions in the mouth, you will need to follow the special diet your doctor outlines. As a general rule, you should avoid alcohol, niacin and aspirin products.
You probably won’t need to be told to sleep on your back. It will be the most comfortable position, and will help promote successful healing. Your head should also be elevated to reduce swelling. You will follow this nighttime routine for at least two weeks.
How can I speed up the healing process?
Your body will heal at its own pace, but an alert and engaged patient is a key part of the process.
Make sure you take your antibiotics to ward off infection, along with any other medication your surgeon may prescribe. Stay alert for any warning signs, such as rising body temperature, facial redness and excessive pain. Call your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms appear.
Eat healthfully, get plenty of rest, and follow the postoperative routine recommended by your surgeon. You will return to Seduction Cosmetic Center the day after your surgery, and again within the week for removal of sutures. If your procedure involved placement of staples in the scalp, those will be removed within two weeks.
