A Tummy Tuck Versus Liposuction

A Tummy Tuck Vs. Liposuction

As we get older, it may be more difficult to maintain a flat stomach, especially if your muscles have weakened. For patients insecure about their stomach, surgery may be an option to get rid of unwanted stomach fat. This leaves patients with two cosmetic surgery options: a tummy tuck or liposuction. Both surgeries can potentially give patients the stomach of their dreams but which one can do it best?

A tummy tuck is an abdominoplasty surgery that targets excess skin, fat and weakened muscles in the abdomen. The surgeon uses general anesthesia to sedate the patient. Once the anesthesia is in effect, the surgeon makes an incision at the bottom of the skin that covers the abdominal wall. The muscles that are exposed tend to be weakened so the surgeon sews them together so the muscles are no longer stretched out. To get rid of excess skin, the skin is pulled over the abdomen revealing a tighter and flatter stomach. The excess skin is trimmed and the incision is closed with sutures.

Similar to a tummy tuck, liposuction removes excess fat from the body. It involves using a thin tube called a cannula to go underneath the skin and loosen the fat cells. The surgeon then suctions out the dislodged fat deposits using a medical vacuum. Liposuction can remove fat not only from the abdomen but the face, neck chest, hips, thighs, buttocks, and arms. When the surgery targets stomach fat, the sessions can take several sessions to give patients their desired results.

Because liposuction focuses on removing fat, it may not be the best option for patients who want to get rid of excess stomach skin caused by pregnancy or major weight loss. However, tummy tucks have a longer recovery process due it being an open surgery. Recovery can take up to six weeks and patients must avoid positions that extend or bend the abdomen so the incision can heal properly. Liposuction recovery can take only a couple of days. Both procedures require patients to avoid strenuous activity such as heavy lifting or exercise.

Though they are entirely different, tummy tucks and liposuction both aim to get patients closer to their body before pregnancy, age, or weight loss.
